Chapter Twenty

Haley

This is definitely going to be a mistake.

Forcing a smile at the woman walking next to me, I banish the intrusive thoughts reminding me of the repeated “dessert” dreams I’ve had since my conversation with Ardis. He doesn’t need to know he got to me, and the last thing I want is for the fine folks at the Sliwa Center to realize I’m breaking every fucking law I’ve ever heard of.

Okay, maybe it’s not that dramatic... but still.

“And it’s a private room, yes?” I prompt. “No audio or video?”

“Neither. Unless you don’t feel you’re safe alone with him?”

I’d probably be safer slathering myself in bacon grease and walking into a den full of wild dogs, but she doesn’t need to know that. “Mr. Darling isn’t a danger as long as he hasn’t had access to narcotics. Will you let Dr. Barnett know I’d like to speak with her when I’m through here? I’d like to be kept up to date on his progress and suggested treatments.”

“Sure thing, Doctor. Right in here.” She leads me into a room that looks so stereotypical I’m taken aback for a moment. “I’ll go get him. Make yourself comfortable.”

It’s nothing but a beige couch, a plain desk, and a few shitty copies of famous paintings lining the grey walls.

No wonder people struggle to find hope in places like this. Frowning, I choose to sit on the couch instead of putting myself behind the hideous desk, so Ardis has a straight shot to me when he walks in.

The door opens not five minutes later, and I hate that my very first thought is how good he looks. They trimmed his hair a little so it’s out of his eyes, giving me a perfect view of how clear they are. He’s in some cheap, pocketless grey sweatpants and a plain white shirt. Not one word on it to warn me of his current mood, but based on his wide smile, I’d say he’s fine. “Finally.”

He closes the door behind him and struts forward, sweeping me up in a moment I wasn’t ready for. Meeting him halfway, I wrap my arms around him for a hug as his face bumps into mine. “Ope,” I squeak. “Did you get taller?”

“‘Ope?’” he repeats with a chuckle. “What’s ‘ope?’”

“Something white people say where I’m from,” I grumble, face heating up. “I guess I haven’t outgrown it when gigantic rockstars go in for extremely inappropriate kisses.”

“I thought we were both going in for that kiss, love. I’ll take a hug, though.” He leans in and pulls me in for a tight hug, nuzzling in my ear so I can hear him say, “Ope” again before he laughs.

This. Fucking. Guy. “Shut up. You’re in rehab for letting the worst version of Spiderman to ever exist slip you bath salts. You don’t get to make fun of me right now, so sit.”

He sighs and plops down far too close to me. “Fucking dickhead wouldn’t tell me what I was tasting in there. Said it’d be a high I’ve never experienced before.
